[YOUTUBE=http://www.youtube.com/v/ft7mv0_XYnc]

PS :- Its 1 o clock in night and because of the wonderful research by DJ we finally did it and please dont come asking for how you did it coz its confidential!!!!!!!!!!!
PS:-well above thing is a spoof and don’t think that i am saying that to save me from any type of trouble that above thing is a spoof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LUG finally!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally there is a Linux User Group in Manipal which will really make things a lot easy for people interested in learning about Linux and Open Source in Manipal.
So how was this group formed???
well there is this rule which does not allow new clubs to be formed in Manipal, so making a group was not an easy task there was some really great thinking and tackling done to make this LUG Manipal possible.
First meeting of the group took place on 10th of this month,So what all happened in the First Ever meeting of LUG in manipal?????
The session was scheduled to start from 5:15pm and it began on 5:20pm with the room NLH303 was almost full with people still coming after the start of the session. At first when i was told about formation of LUG first thought was not many people are going to come but as the time of the meet came close we were thinking that people might not fit in the room and if this would have happened near Diwali there would have been huge turn up enough to fill 2 rooms, Anyway there were somewhere around 80 – 90 people. So first Shubendra (3rd year) and Ayush (3rd year) came and started with what are the objectives of the group and what all they planned to do, which was followed by Explanation of Open Source Philosophy by Manish (3rd year) , which was followed by Video of Vista vs Beryl which according to most was best part, a Question Answer round was there in the end in which i jumped in ;-) and answered a lot of questions, there were some genuine questions like the audio/video codec support in Linux and some really shit questions like ” What if i get stuck while trying something on Linux and I dont have an internet connection, a phone to ask my friend for help and i dont want to look into help??? ” now what will some one answer him……..
here the end of the session was called and all the people who are interested in working on something were asked to stay back, here again there was surprise and some 35+ people stayed back for different work, which was really great

so the things LUG Manipal is working on are

  • A Linux Install Fest – infact the meeting in next semester will be the time when this will happen
  • Setting up of a Wiki ( this is the thing i am working on)
  • Setting up a Web Site of Lug manipal
  • More sessions on Linux and Open source
  • Increasing the uptake of Linux in Manipal
  • Starting up a Blog
  • There are also plan for release of a monthly magazine

so well lets see how far this goes……….. Best Of Luck everyone

Whatever happened to Tape Worm

Tape Worm
It all started with the IEEE workshop in the end of September when it was decided that 5 people abhimanu (shabby), Shankar, Me ( Ankur /OS ), Nikhil and Shantanu will be there in my team and then after few class everything was over, we never decided on what exactly are we going to make and then suddenly on 9th out of nowere i came with an idea of making a bot while talking with ankit and then it all started and i found that i was the only one working on it and the team mates were nowere to be seen, so with little mutual help from ankit we started with it, the fact that ankit was also going to participate in that helped us, we selected the designs got the material ( some insane trips to Udupi ) and acctually made it in 2 days. I used 4 pepsi can for the design so i got to drink 4 pepsi’s ;-) and a lot of Tape thus TAPE WORM was born, ankit went for some strange name of UGLY DUCKLING which actually sounded cool at that time.

But it was all same in the end, we participated and enjoyed a lot, there were some 40 teams and only 8 made it to the second round  ( with huge question marks on a lot of people’s face ) and we didnt but well we were so close to almost making it, anyway i am ready for the next time ……………..

TAPE WORM – my aquatrix BOT

TAPE WORM

here is just the pic of that more to come up shortly

Taj was, is and will remain a wonder

Taj Mahal

Ya, no matter what people say this symbol of love will remain a wonder, well until it gets destroyed by pollution and politics lol

iPhone

No iPhone for Me

iPhone

Well i know this is kind of a late post about one of the most hyped product the Apple iPhone which is currently being sold in USA for a hefty price and already being used by more then 5,00,000 LUCKY people or not so lucky considering they will have to use AT&T’s network for 2 years, sticking for a single operator for 2 years now thats something bad, I know manny people who dot stick to a single operator for more then 2 months forget about 2 years ooh where m i going. So aah… coming to the point what will i personally say about the iPhone i mean would i really like to buy it given i have the money, well the answer is surprisingly NO. i would like to tell you my points for that

1 ) iPhone comes with a 2 YEAR CONTRACT,well i dont know about what will be the case in India but that is a very strong point o me. I mean i would not really like to stick to a operator and miss those new SIM benefits lol
2 ) i know it runs a striped down version of Mac os X and Safari but it has got NO SDK ( Software Developement Kit) which means there will be no killer apps, it has webapps which are basicly AJAX apps which runs through Safari but then any Symbian phone with OS 9.3 or above can also run most of them
3 ) this might be a big reason for many people, iPhone has NO VIDEO RECORDING, cant believe what is written here but its true. It may be having that 2 megapixel camera but it really dont have video recording support.
4 ) NO CUSTOM RINGTONE ya you cant have one of your favorate mp3 tone as ringtone
5 ) NO GPS ya i know for most of the people its of no use but Google maps with GPS would rock
6 ) NO IM no SDK no apps no IM as simple as that but u can have those WAP ones but they suck big time
7 ) ALL IPOD ACCESSORIES WONT WORK that means buying seperate accessories for iPod and iPhone
8 ) NO FLASH SUPPORT which means although it has Safari Browser it wont be able to open those flash sites and possibly YOUTUBE

So my conclusion, i rather wait for Openmoko or go for Nokia N95

UPDATE:- There is you tube support in iPhone currently dunno how and most of these problems might get solved  with its new firmware which is expected to be released around September.

HowTo copy VCD in Ubuntu

Some the biggest problem with Ubuntu that i find is copying a VCD ( the one copying whom is legal!!!), But not anymore here is a simple way to copy those VCDs into simple mpeg files u just need to install a program with apt-get and type a command and thats it. So first install vcdimager type
sudo apt-get install vcdimager
after it gets installed just type
vcdxrip
and you will find the avseq**.mpeg files in your home folder enjoy

Using GPRS with Ubuntu without Bluetooth on Airtel

Well i know you wont be interested in using GPRS for connecting to net as it offers a download speed of 5KB/s instead of your broadband connection, but it can be of great help when you are traveling or when you dont have a broadband like me ( special thanks to BSNL for that).

I wanted to install Amarok on my newly installed Ubuntu 7.04 so i needed a net connection for that there were a hell lot of dependency as Amarok is basicly a KDE application. so my hunt began for a way to connect my Nokia 3250 with Airtel MobileOffice to it. I found a hell lot of sites upon searching for it but all of them required me to download some or other package for which i needed a net connection lol, but then on Linuxquestions.org i finally found a way to configure it without any extra package just the default Ubuntu Install and guess what it works with all Linux systems (it was originally posted for Fedora). So here is what to do

First:- check the VID and PID of your phone, To do this simpily connect your phone in PcSuit mode through the USB cable provided then type in terminal
lsusb

to get the output somewhat like this

ankur@ankur-desktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0421:042d Nokia Mobile Phones
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Notice the ID 0421:042d Nokia Mobile Phones here 421 is the VID and 42d is the PID replace them with what is shown in your case below. Now run the command
sudo /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x(vid) product=0x(pid)

Like “sudo /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0×421 product=0x42d” in my case

then run the following command
wvdialconf create

To get the following output
ankur@ankur-desktop:~$ sudo wvdialconf create

ttyACM0: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK
Found an USB modem on /dev/ttyACM0.
Modem configuration written to create.
ttyACM0: Speed 460800; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"

This shows that a modem is connected at /dev/ttyACM0, Now substitute this at (your modem) in the script below
Enter the command
sudo gedit etc/wvdial.conf

delete any thing already written there and place this in that
[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = (your modem)
Baud = 230400
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *99***1#
Username = A
Password = B
Stupid Mode = 1

All done now to connect open terminal and type sudo wvdial and you are connected with the following outputankur@ankur-desktop:~$ sudo wvdial

--> Cannot get information for serial port.
